Tweets: What Are They?

Tweets refers to messages sent using Twitter, a website, and consist of short bursts of information sent between users. Tweets consist of text based communications and are equal to or less than 140 characters typed in the message. The messages are displayed on a user’s profile page. Tweets are also visible to the general public unless the person tweeting restricts the messages to followers.

The majority of people who use Twitter to send Tweets do so usually for one of six reasons.

Reason 1 – To provide random thoughts, minutes of one’s day, or just to speak out. This is considered pointless babble by some and social grooming by others. These are often personal, one sided announcements that do not involve anyone speaking back.

Reason 2 – To enter into conversation with one’s peers. This involves two or more people tweeting to each other in a shared communication.

Reason 3 – To give something of value to others, meaning things like advertising sales, free give-a-ways, coupons, special events, or other items.

Reason 4 – To promote one’s self. Self promotion is done often by people wanting attention, to bring attention to their work, or to gain prestige or public recognition.

Reason 5 – To send spam to others. Spam is usually bulk advertising meant to draw in people to promote a business, execute scams, acquire information for use in criminal means such as identity theft, and annoy or damage the target.

Reason 6 – To share news such as current events. Tweets are not accepted generally as legitimate sources for information because Tweets are often first hand accounts and not easily verifiable as a trusted source.

Tweets are a handy method of fast communication capable of reaching large audiences. The use of Twitter and tweeting is increasing. It is especially prevalent among people who are on the go or busy.
